BANNOCKBURN Post Office will be celebrating an incredible landmark for its most familiar face, this week.

Sandra Grant, whom locals will no doubt realise from behind the counter, will be marking 45 years of working at the village office. Sandra, who was brought up in Bannockburn, began her career in February 1967 soon after leaving school and has been a constant presence at the office ever since.

During her career, Sandra has worked for 6 sub-postmasters and witnessed many changes over the years, such as the change from the old manual system to today's fully computerised system. In 67' when Sandra first joined the Post Office, the price of a stamp was 4d (2p), and her duties often involved delivering telegrams.

Keen to pay tribute to Bannockburn Post Office's most constant fixture, Sub-postmaster Ian Carmichael said: "Sandra is a legend in Bannockburn. She has literally served generations of the same families; young mothers when she started are now collecting their pensions. Sandra is a great assistant to me and she is marvellous with customers. 45 years is a remarkable achievement."

Reflecting on her tenure, Sandra, 60, said: "I started in the Post Office in the first week of 67' when my Mum enquired about a job for me. I finished school on the Friday, and started on the Monday. Once I got into the job, I really enjoyed it and have never seen any reason to leave.

"I know just about everybody that comes in, and you soon become familiar with the new faces. My colleague Lynn wasn't even born when I started here!

"Some of the changes that I've witnessed have been incredible. With the use of computers, the job is very different from when I started. It is also fascinating to see how the village has expanded and is now an important commuter area. When I was growing up here, people maybe travelled into Stirling for work, but rarely too much further a field."

Sandra added: "The time seems to have flown by. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and helping customers. I have no immediate plans to retire and I intend to keep calm and carry on."
